Hi everybody, I thought I’d start a thread for anyone who wants to talk about drawing and painting game art. I use Krita on my laptop with a stylus.
I like doing art but am not naturally talented at it. One of my hacks is viewing a 3d model in an online editor and rotating it to the view I like. I then screenshot it and then use that as a guide for my drawing. It helps even more to make a layer above it set to alpha transparency so that the paint stays within the shape of the pic below.
i probably need to start using this. I use photoshop elements, inkscape and aseprite to do my art thang…i know i should look at other options …im pretty quick with photoshop though…i know where everything is…kind of stuck in my ways!
Yeah. So I’ll start by saying Krita can be a bit confusing at the beginning. Zgc, you can turn any brush into an eraser by pressing the E key. This means that not only can you erase, but you can use a fancy brush in eraser mode to gently fade the paint that’s already there. I have the layout extremely customised to suit me so I don’t know where the eraser is in the default settings but it looks like this. But yeah, E is easier. Also do Control click to sample a color (eyedropper) and shift drag to change brush size. B for brush, F for fill. Each tool has settings as well.
Also, Zgc, play with layers and change the blending modes for some funky or useful results. Sometimes I duplicate a layer and then change the blending mode of the upper layer for a nice effect.
Oh, and one very important Krita thing. To save your work and then work on it again, just save, which will save as a .kra file. But to save to a png, jpeg or some other image format, use Export. Never use save to png as then you’ll lose your file with editable layers etc. => save to .kra, export to png
Yep Krita is free. It’s available on windows, linux, mac. I’ve heard there’s an android version that apparently isn’t any good but I’m not uptodate on that. I’m not trying to brainswash people into using Krita though haha, It’s one painting app that I happen to like and is free. If you’re comfortable with what you’re using and it has brushes and layers then just stick with that.
traditionally, gimp. if im in a crunch and it wont affect the look, the built in one in gdevelop. Maybe sometimes rebelle 8 depending on the art style. rarely aseprite, its just not my kinda app id rather use gimp for that too.
