I’m happy to share my first game made with GDevelop, which I’ve published on itch.io. It’s a long platformer featuring 5 levels, 5 bosses, and many different gameplay mechanics. In many parts of the game, precise timing and accuracy are essential, and as well, patience. There are no lives and no continues. The last time I played it, it took me over 4 hours to finish.
In each stage, you learn a new magic ability that is required to complete the levels and also changes the gameplay.
I’m releasing this as the final version. I’ve tested and retested the game many times and I’m completely satisfied with it, although there may still be a few minor bugs.
All the graphics and music were created by me. The sound effects are mostly not mine — I didn’t know how to create them — so I sourced them from the Pixabay community.
Any suggestions, positive or negative, are always welcome!
Any suggestion, positive and of course negative feedback is always welcome!
Hi thought it looked great and i enjoyed the intro but i didnt get to play it…sequence of events below
.On gdgames I pressed return to start the game - went through the intro
.On game starting I pressed every key but nothing happened - i did press return to see if that did anything. I expected either wasd or arrow to work.
.I exited and reloaded the game. I looked at options - it seemed to be controller only? I have a controller plugged in (cheap fake xbox thing) and so I pressed return to start the game.
.I spammed return during the intro and doing this caused the game to freeze up and i needed to load the game again.
.So loaded again and tried using a contoller but only the jump button worked.
perhaps it’s just me!
Thanks for trying the game and for your feedback
I almost always play the executable version because it runs more smoothly on my old computer. However, I did test the browser version as well, and it works fine for me.
What I imagine might be happening in your case is related to the controller. I set up the game so that as soon as a controller is plugged in — even in the middle of the game — it automatically switches to controller mode. I have an old controller here that GDevelop doesn’t fully recognize; it only detects a few buttons, like the Return button. But I can’t be completely sure, since I only have two controllers: one old one and a newer generic controller that works fine with GDevelop.
If no controller is plugged in, or if it’s unplugged, the game should automatically switch back to keyboard controls. In the options menu, you can choose to play either with the arrow keys or with WASD.
ok - i thought afterwards that it might be something like that - this controller does normally work on gdevelop games but it is just a cheap thing from ebay! I’ll unplug it and give it another go
check out the logic on the intro though as spamming return (a lot of people do this during intros!) might be causing a variable to stick
Unfortunately, I don’t have the means to test with another controller. However, you were right about spamming the Return key at the beginning — I tried it, and by pressing Return very quickly, the game got stuck on the last animation. Pressing Escape would skip the whole introduction.
I’ve made some changes and uploaded a new version. It seems to work better now.
its quite unforgiving. Is it too difficult or is it just me? - wait for more feedback on this! It has a very consistent style which is great and I think any suggestions from me regarding the look of it might actually steer it away from what you’re trying to achieve
I like the music btw - i do my own music on my stuff too!
