Explosion Generator Extension

I’ve switched this thread to extension category now as b4 it was more of a blog and im going to move on to other things for a bit.
so here’s a link to test the extension - its designed as an alternative to the particle emitter

updated the extension a bit - Bit more of a game to it now with Score!! Plus you can play about with some of the explosion extension parameters and make pretty patterns

Ok - so i’ve spent a few days on this now. Mrs Limpet - practically encouraged me to throw five hours at this on valentines day! - ‘on you go!..you just sit there doing that important thing that you’re doing’ i think were her exact words.
The game now has more to it - i got carried away! - rescue the humans - there’s object culling so that i can have a massive cave system etc - and the rest!

Play about with the settings and make pretty patterns!! - link to that scene bottom left corner.

I’ve added a boss battle - sort of one eyed jellyfish thing off to the right. Currently killing it is way too hard!
but can you kill it - can you? - you’d have to bit a bit nifty!

Don’t know where i’m going with this one exactly…but a week on i
added damage system this morning and better ship graphics, take off land system- eventually you’ll need to land to pick up the human miners and get out of the ship and do stuff. going to add weapon upgrades next. But i have a list of the things that i actually should be doing next to the list of game improvements! which list should i complete?
question - the aliens are now gone once killed - does this lead to an empty world? Do you like it when you go back and have to kill things again - or is it irritating?

  • i added them to object culling and a boolean variable dead in the culling array so that - they don’t respawn - but i miss them once they’re gone. Aliens are going to have 3 health tomorrow rather than none!

Cool project! The explosions and human collecting reminds me a bit of Strikeforce 1991, maybe it can serve as an inspiration to further improve it!

Initially I set out to recreate defender as I was stuck on the game id been making and fancied a break…hence human rescue thing but as ever I don’t actually have the mental discipline to stick to the plan and started taking it off somewhere else. I did the explosion extension before I wanted to do the ace explosions that you get in defender and retro space shooters.

Ohhh Defender, good old memories. I’m not that old, but I used to play a ton of games on MAME when I was younger (Actually I still do from time to time)

Sadly I am old enough - always one of my favourites growing up - I think there was an urban myth that it was the one that they used to train fighter pilots! I did use MAME a while back! and a spectrum simulator thing.

Update - crucially…you can now land and get out of the ship! I’ve not set the collisions, damage for player yet though and so you are, at least temporarily invincible. When out of the ship use mouse to fire.
should all work with touch now - but it has yet to be rigorously tested

OK - Arcade style Demo Game Updates ‘SPACE CAVES OF CERES’ - New alien added, cave system now double the size! The benefits of landing and getting out of the ship are now more apparent.
gonna tidy it up a bit add a few more things onto the extension and then put it on itch.
What do you think?
time to do something that’s a bit more domestically productive!

Right - I’ve added sound and music to ‘space caves of ceres’ now - I did some music - sort of space rock when in the ship and brian eno when you get out!

I was just looking at the strikeforce1991 videos - its really cool. What I like about the explosions in that one is that they create the bits on different parallax layers and so you get the effect of a 3d explosion - not sure how i would do that here - i’ll have a think…i could give the objects different scale and set the forces to vary according to scale - i’ll try that!

Following on from my previous comment here’s a sort of fake 3d explosion of pigs where the forces are affected by scale and scale is set to lerp to a vlue thats preset at random with step .4,1.6,.1

added yet another parameter for speed decay rate and also one for fade - so that fade is based on scale. It’s becoming very a very complicated extension now with 9 or 10 functions a a baffling 18 parameters each - so i think i’ll stop there and do a 3d version as a seperate entity!

Are there any parameters that it doesn’t matter much what it is? As in, there’s an optimal range that’s pretty small and you could have it as a fixed value?
