Farewell GDevelop

…I’m switching to Typescript.

No game engine.

Just Typescript[1].

WHY?! :sob:

My primary reason is that I have gotten tired of the limitations of visual coding.

I’m not saying visual coding is bad- you can do a TON with visual coding- but for my specific preferences (near-absolute control), no visual scripting[2] could satisfy me.

In addition, I am currently taking a Game Design with JavaScript course, which would normally cost $199 if my teacher hadn’t covered it for me.

So of course I’m not putting that to waste.

Why Typescript?

My final main reason is that I have started to prefer text coding. Now, I hate the syntax of most languages (don’t get me started on Python or Java. ESPECIALLY ANY C_!), but I was surprised when I saw the syntax of JavaScript/Typescript. Unlike other languages I’ve seen, JavaScript didn’t seem to simple, but it didn’t look like it was designed for only computers to read.

Yes, I know that I was talking about JavaScript, but after researching[3], I came to the conclusion that Typescript was better for game development than regular JavaScript.

What about Twardy 2.0?

…Oh.

I can’t remember if I have said this publicly yet, but all Twardy 2.0 development has ceased since the beginning of August (ironically, it was shortly after I announced development would still happen in the August 2026 State Of The Game Post). The problem with the game was that the scope was to big (and too good to trim), and I kept seeing Twardy 2.0 as a job instead of a hobby to increase production, but that ultimately lead to its downfall.

What about your OTHER GDevelop game?

As for Tip By The Toe, I will continue to provide bug fixes and improvements, but I will be completely leaving GDevelop by 2027. Also, don’t expect any major additions.

…So, what now?

Since I am not completely leaving until 2027, I will read GDevelop Forum on occasion to see what the community is making.

As for what my first game in Typescript will be…

My latest project is code-named Project Rogueguns. It will be the fourth installment that will completely rewrite a long-lasting game series I’ve had.

Thanks for everything. GDevelop has been a key part in my road to being a Game Developer, and I will never forget that[4].

  1. With the Babylon.js library. ↩︎

  2. that I know of ↩︎

  3. I already knew what Typescript was prior to this ↩︎

  4. …hopefully. ↩︎

@99Studios Good luck with your next chapter and have fun learning

Farewell on your journey.

Good luck and hope to see you soon Harley  :waving_hand:

Hopefully we’ll meet again someday.
(But on that note… Why not just use GDJS? It’s pretty good.)

Never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end

Say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Holdin’ on, we’ve gotta try
Holdin’ on to never say goodbye"

Good luck with your TS studies!
But I think it’s possible that you’ll go back to GDevelop, because I once got tired of the limitations without code, but after learning C++, JS, CSS, C#, and Unity, I decided to go back to GDevelop after some time.

All the best - But don’t rule out a return to something like visual scripting - it’s fun!

farewell and good luck

Good luck on the typescript stuff. The Twardy journeys definitely been a wild and weird ride, and I’m glad to some extend that I was there from the start.
