iOS Upload Error: iPad Multitasking / Landscape Orientations

Apple Error:

Validation failed: The “UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft,UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight” orientations were provided for the UISupportedInterfaceOrientations Info.plist key... but you need to include all orientations to support iPad multitasking.

The Problem:

  1. Gdevelop automatically sets all iOS exports to “Universal**”** (iPhone + iPad).
  2. Because Apple sees an iPad-compatible build, it forces iPad Multitasking rules (requiring all 4 screen orientations).
  3. If your game is Landscape-only, Apple rejects the build.

simplest fix:

allow us to set our device list in ios export ( ipad or iphone or both)

Your error is genuinely two different problems wearing the same coat. Let me split them.

1. Why Apple throws this

Your export targets Universal (iPhone + iPad), so App Store Connect treats the build as iPad-capable. Apple’s rule for iPad apps: declare support for all four interface orientations, or explicitly opt out of iPad multitasking. Two landscape orientations alone fail validation with exactly the message you got. So your instinct is right, the cleanest fix is controlling the device list, and the export dialog doesn’t expose it yet.

2. What fixes it (pick one, all at the Xcode level)

  • Ship iPhone-only. If you don’t need iPad: exported project → app target → General → Deployment Info → Devices: iPhone (equivalent: TARGETED_DEVICE_FAMILY = 1 in build settings). The iPad requirement no longer applies. Rebuild, resubmit.
  • Keep iPad, opt out of multitasking. Turn on “Requires full screen” (UIRequiresFullScreen = YES in the Info.plist). Apple now describes this as a compatibility mode and keeps pushing resizable windows on iPadOS 26, so treat it as a stopgap, not a destination.
  • Keep iPad properly. Declare all four orientations and make the layout survive rotation. More work, and the only route Apple recommends long-term.

3. If your build also rotates when it shouldn’t on iPad

Different bug, same family, and it got fixed recently. An app that declares all orientations is a “multitasking” app, and iOS on iPad then ignores any runtime orientation lock. That’s the issue from this thread, fixed by PR 9050 (merged Sep 2): if your project orientation is set to Landscape or Portrait, it is now declared at build time, so the native app is built to support only that. Shipped in 5.6.282. Note that “Default” declares nothing, so make sure the orientation is actually set. This won’t clear the validation error by itself (that one is about the device family), but it fixes rotation behavior if you keep iPad.

4. Your feature request

“iPhone / iPad / Universal in the export” is a real gap, and the options in section 2 are exactly what it would automate. Please file it at Issues · 4ian/GDevelop · GitHub and paste the validation text verbatim. If you rebuild on 5.6.282+ and still hit this, also drop the exact rejection message in the iPad thread above; precise reproductions are what got the last iPad fix merged.

Hello, thank you for reporting this issue.
It is indeed directly related to the fix we’ve pushed recently.

To go around that issue until xcode 27 is mandatory for builds (April 2027) we’re disabling iPad multitasking for all build.
This will be active in the next GDevelop release.
