Here are a few personal suggestions for GD Games that might be worth considering in the future.
1. A Dedicated Mobile Version
I believe the platform has significant potential on mobile devices. By this, I mean a fully supported mobile experience, including a mobile-friendly UI and a game library optimized for smartphone users. Games that are not compatible with mobile devices could simply be hidden from mobile users to ensure a better overall experience.
2. A Monetization System Using GD Coins
It could be beneficial to introduce a virtual currency system, such as GD Coins. Users would be able to purchase GD Coins and spend them on in-game items within games hosted on GD Games. Developers could then convert the GD Coins they earn into real money, with GD Games taking a percentage of each transaction. This would create a win-win ecosystem for both developers and the platform, similar to how Robux works on Roblox.
3. Non-Intrusive Advertising
Adding advertisements could provide an additional source of revenue for GD Games. I don’t think most users would mind seeing ads as long as they are kept to a minimum and integrated thoughtfully into the platform, rather than being overly disruptive to the user experience.
I actually started writing these suggestions after installing the mobile version of Itch.io, which still has many limitations. One of the biggest issues is game save data management. It’s incredibly frustrating to play a game that doesn’t properly save your progress.
I hope these ideas can be taken into consideration, because I genuinely believe GD Games has a lot of potential. It could become an excellent platform for GDevelop creators to distribute their games, especially during the early stages of their careers. This would be particularly valuable for indie developers with limited budgets who need a way to monetize their work, especially those who face difficulties publishing their games on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
There is one problem with this point. The GDevelop team will have to add game moderators, because someone might add purchases for which you won’t get rewards. And it won’t be easy to gather a team of volunteer game moderators.
Yes, I agree that this is probably the biggest challenge.
Unfortunately, there will always be dishonest or inexperienced developers who may abuse the system. Content moderation is another major concern. If explicit or inappropriate content slips through, it could potentially create problems for GD Games, especially if a mobile version is released. Even large platforms struggle with this issue. For example, there are still games on the Google Play Store with questionable content that remain publicly available, which shows how important proper moderation really is.
Perhaps a mobile version of GD Games could start with a smaller selection of trusted and reviewed games rather than opening submissions to everyone immediately. This would make moderation much more manageable during the early stages.
As for GD Coins, I think a refund system would be necessary, although implementing one would be quite complex. Another possible approach could be a buyer protection system. Users could be encouraged to make a small purchase first before spending larger amounts. If they do not receive the promised item or reward, they should be able to report the issue within a specific timeframe, such as 24 hours, so the transaction can be reviewed and potentially refunded.
It’s definitely not an easy system to build, but I believe there are ways to reduce the risks while still creating new monetization opportunities for indie developers.
