Neo Cityscapes: Devlog and Test Build Library (Superthread)

NOTE: PLEASE PLAY THE LATEST GAME BUILDS PUBLISHED IN THE LATEST POSTS

Decided to remake my first big game. Did some work on it over the last 2 months and decided to get feedback on some aspects of the game (mainly the sprites and music). I’ll also post any updates made to the game here, maybe, when I feel like it.

Anyways, here’s a link to the test build. Not much here other than an electrical box and a lamp post (also, is it spelt lamp post or lampost?)

Hopefully you enjoy what little is here.

Thanks for playing :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit 1:
Here’s another build, hopefully the music actually plays this time.

Edit 2:
GDevelop doing the GDevelop thing by not updating any of my game builds again.

This isn’t really, an update, but I forgot to mention what was already added to the game, so here is a list:

  1. A very nice parallax background
  2. A tile map (first time using one of those)
  3. music (They call me the Michael Jackson of GDevelop. Grass is green. The sky is blue. One of the last 3 sentences was A lie, can you guess which one it is?)
  4. 3 Playable characters: Rolly (he’s playable in the demo), Joe, and Copy Joe MK.III

Also, he’s not in the game yet, but expect Bill to be added to the game soon

Anyways, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for this game, as the original really wasn’t the best.

Anyways, thanks for reading

Hi - I did like the parallax background. I didn’t get any music - I think this is the common issue of browser games not playing music that’s triggered at the beginning of the scene if the game hasn’t been interacted with. There’s loads of threads on this describing how to get around it. basically have an intro scene that requires interacting with first.

Update 1:

Bill has been added (unplayable in the following build)
work on tutorial level has started
New background for tutorial level (wanted a big change from the generic starry background the the original games tutorial level, I think I did a pretty good job.

Also, I want to involve the suggestions of users here more, so I’ll also add polls to see what people want.

So here’s the first poll question, how many levels should be in the game, and how should the progression through each level be?

  • 4 Levels, you beat one, you go to the next (like in original game)
  • more than 4 levels, you beat one, you go to the next
  • More than 4 levels, in each level there are different exits which dictate which level you go to
  • more than 4 levels, but separate from main 4 levels

Update 2:

Changed Rolly’s dash
Added “Roll” Animation for Rolly
Modification of the “Platformer Character Animator” Extension (added support for “Horizontal Dash” Extension

I would appreciate any feedback for the new dash that I implemented for Rolly.

Controls:

Z to Dash (only works in air)
Z after Dashing to Dash Cancel (is a bit glitch though)
Space after Dashing to Dash Jump (Must not have double jumped)
Shift to Dash Cancel Jump

I would really appreciate it if someone can give me feedback on the dash roll mechanic in my latest build.

Here’s a new build. I managed to fix most of the issues with dash cancelling. Hopefully it will be a lot smoother.

Again, I would really appreciate feedback on this new mechanic.

Still waiting on that feedback.

Still waiting…

Update 3:
Added Climbable Fences (Press Up to climb)(Press up and Jump on a fence to fence boost, makes climbing a lot faster)

Would still appreciate feedback for the new dash roll

Update 3.1:
Added after Image Effect to dash animation

Update 3.2:
Expanded Tutorial Level
Added music to tutorial level (temporary)
Added bare-bones level select

Hopefully I can get feedback on the roll dash this time

Hi @Yhac10 - How do you do a roll dash? I think there needs to be a bit more info on the tutorial as I was trying all the keys. …some arrows and text for keys and what to do. The fall speed feels a little slow to me. I thought maybe the ball could squash as it lands and stretch as it jumps.

I probably should have explained in my latest post that I gave all the controls related to roll dashing in a previous post. If you want, here’s a list of controls for all things dash related:

Z to Roll Dash (Must be mid air)
Press Z after a roll dash to cancel the roll dash
Press Space while in a roll dash to carry momentum from the dash into a jump (won’t work if double-jump is used up)
Hold Z and press Space on the floor to instantly do a dash jump
Press either L-Shift or R-Shift to Jump while cancelling a roll dash

Also, an explanation of the basic controls you probably already figured out:

Arrows to move
Space to jump
Space in mid-air to double jump

As for the rest of your feedback, I’m working on the tutorial text already. I thought of trying a new system where instead of multiple text objects, there’s just one with a variable that can be changed between instances of said text object. Its not working to well so far, so maybe it’ll be a while until I add the tutorial text.

you can base the text on player x position. eg greater than 1000 change text to ‘hey try a roll dash using Z while mid air!!’

Not a bad idea, probably not the way I’ll go for most levels, but it’ll work fine for the tutorial.

Update 4:
Added Title Screen
Added Transitions
You can now select your character at title screen (press 1 for Rolly, 2 for Bill, and 3 for Joe)
New music for Title Screen added
Tutorial Text Added

Ignore this, and play this:

So much nicer

Also, for anyone who thinks fence climbing is too slow, holding up and jump on a fence should be a good temporary fix before I alter the characters climbing speed

Also, any feedback for roll dashing would still be appreciated

Update 4.1:
Nothing new, just the itch.io page

Will receive way less updates though

Password to access itch.io page is: “neopolis”

Thanks for playing

i can’t get the pressing up fence mechanic! music’[s a bit loud! you need a timer while falling to die and restart as i needed to load the game again once falling indefinitely - ps please could you try spindly again - see if its any less laggy!

Completely forgot about the not dying and falling thing. I’ll have that fixed. I do admit the music is a little loud, long story behind why though. For the fence jump, just hold up and jump on a fence to climb fences even faster.

Also, did you try out any of the other characters?

I got as far as the pink square that time but i didnt know what to do once i got there! How do you get the other characters? - it just went straight to the blue ball. I like the exploration elements - the fence mechanic works well

Pink/red square is the level goal. I just didn’t program it. Explained this in the update log, but press 1,2 or 3 to change character.

Also, what blue ball are you talking about?

Sorry - red ball!. I tried the other characters! I was able to get to other areas using wall jump and triple jump!
