I’m currently learning gdevelop and watching this tutorial. It’s a step by step but none of the steps in this video is explained on how to do it. Is there another video that explains it better? I mean the tutorial is like an overview of what is being done and not a step by step process. Please see timestamp 1:20.
Hi @Japh!
It’s always the same problem: videos are not always the best manner to explain the things. They principally show what it can be done and not often how do. It also depends of your knowledge of course.
It’s why i personally prefer docs on paper, particularly the big docs and experiment by myself.

Hi Japh, I didn’t watch the whole video, just a little bit before and after your timestamp. I agree that that section of the video at least was more of an overview than an explanation.
I also remember when I was new that things were very very confusing at the beginning even though I had experience with other engines. I started by going through some tutorials on the wiki rather than watching videos and if there was one little thing that didn’t make sense to me it would slow me down so much.
I’m really just writing this to say that I understand what you’re going through and to encourage you to keep going. If you prefer videos to reading, then my only advice would be to try another video, even other channels as there are other channels doing GDevelop stuff.
If you don’t mind reading, there is the GDevelop wiki. It has tutorials as well as general info but some of the tutorials might have images from previous versions of GDevelop where things are in different places etc.
Even though you might be interested in platformers, it’s a good idea to read/watch info that goes over the general basic principles of how GDevelop and game logic works. Good luck, it’s really a lot of fun.
Thanks! I’m not really a developer so it’s really hard to learn it. I also like learning through videos. I did manage to make it work like in the tutorial but I have to explore and experiment by myself on what event action the tutorial is using. I hope they also make a course. I’ve seen the course they offer but it’s impossible to learn without audio.
I got no experience in game dev and not a coder. . I nearly quit on learning gdevelop because of that part of the tutorial. Just today I had to explore and experiment so I can get it to work.
I like video form of learning. I did try watching other tutorials and tried to implement it.
I’ll try to look into the WIKI. Thanks for the advice and nice words.
One thing I’d recommend (not sure how helpful it would be for you) is to just play around with pre-made GDevelop kits. There are plenty of full games for you to look at to understand the code. I myself starting looking at the Duck Platformer game and ended up turning that kit into a full game that releases tomorrow!
This forum is actually a useful learning tool…even the threads that don’t apply to what you’re doing, or are ever likely to do, can throw up a ‘ahh I did not know you could do that!’ moment …and then you can store them up for later!
I second the advice above…opening up the example projects is good value, and try out alternative videos. You’ll find that some of them aren’t as polished but go into more detail.
Hi @Japh!
My preferred games are exactly platformers games, in any case when i create a game.
If i can help you to start with GD, don’t hesitate to contact me and the other members of this forum.

edit - I realised id not watched the vid - which bit is befuddling you at 1.20 Japh?. Wesley talks in a helpful chirpy manner but he does it quite quickly! Boolean variables yes/no, true/false - they can only be in two states. This is useful when you toggle them and switch them from one to the other. Useful for things being dead or alive.
He’s using the platform conditions ‘is falling’ - is it falling - if yes then do this…
He’s using sub events
where it’s indented - that’s a sub event of the event above.
if this is true - do this…
(sub event) but also do this…
The blue boxes are event groups- these contain events and can be opened and closed - these are useful! - but not really something that you confront a beginner with!
sub events are really useful for logic flow
player object variable ‘dead’ is false
…then do …virtually everything is a sub event here
player object variable ‘dead’ is true
…then do this series of events, play the death march and make the enemy do a little dance etc
Thank you for taking your time to write this. I’m still learning on how to use boolean.
I can’t see anything wrong there…does it work?
There’s lots of event groups there! The event under fly fall is not a sub event of fly fall and so that group is empty…but that won’t stop it working
Hi all!
As you say Dave, many events groups and i agree with that. So, i haven’t use subgroups but everyone has their own own way to proceed. And if it works, why not!

Yeah, It’s from the tutorial. It got me confused. I made a version of it so that i can just understand it easily.
@Amigo54 Me too, I just don’t currently have a working Printer to print out tutorial transcripts off YouTube.
