Anybody successfully created a 2D metroidvania with gdevelop?

Any body successful created a 2D metroidvania with gdevelop?

Any existing games people have developed?

This is probably more for the community section.
I think it really depends on your definition of success.
If success is defined as creating something that you’re pleased with and enjoyed creating then yes, I believe I have!
If success is defined as creating a game that was universally popular and financially successful then no, I’m certain that I haven’t!

Ok, by success I mean if you completed a project and we’re happy with it, not if it was a financial success.

Hand drawn metroidvania is what I’m going for, that game looks great I’ll check it out the trailer looks great. I think I’ll put in the time to learn gdevelop.

The main problem with making a metroidvania is how long it takes. It can take years of endlessly adding content only for you to fall out of love with it and move on to something else on year 8. You can do wonderful things with gdevelop but if you’re making a complicated project you need to carefully optimise your events and use of behaviours. I tend to use object culling on the games that i make with lots of objects. I have a few metroidvanias that i’m working on at the moment - I think they’re great but they’re not finished and they probably never will be!

You can make anything in gdevelop :3

What you said is stupid like literally
Cause you can find tons of good metroidvania type of games made by solo devs and it did not took them even 2 years
And only thing that is your way is your determination and time you can and want to contribute to it
Then only determining factor for finished product is how much you want to cream into it
So in other words problem with making metroidvania is not in how long it takes but in you

And just so we are clear
What you just said is like saying making tetris as your first game is hard
More likely not game is the issue here but person making it is the issue

Where tetris is fairly hard game to make at 1st when you won’t figure out how to check if line or multiple lines needs to be cleared
But that again comes down to person and not complexity of the game itself

ok - im happy to accept that i’m the problem, but i can’t be the only one.

Took me 4 years to make auto tile logic
FOUR YEARS HERE
Well at least auto tile logic that is efficient

BUT does that mean i am stupid or that auto tile is hard?
NAH it just mean i was not lucky enough to figure it out earlier
Or contribute to learning enough effort and time to manage to achieve it earlier
Well i not gonna lie
I did hope someone will come here and by chance create some logic that will help me make auto tile logic
It would not even need to be related to auto tile i just needed something to start with it
AND I FEEL NO SHAME
And then 1 day i just hit a moment i realized i know exactly what i need to do

So again ask yourself
Is autotile hard?
For you yes for me yes
But is autotile actually hard? NO
And that is huge difference

I’ve spent quite a bit of my own time working on a Metroidvania in GDevelop. In my opinion, it’s definitely doable… I’ve always thought that. As said, it depends a lot on consistency and willingness to keep at it.

It’s not difficult in itself; what’s difficult is keeping yourself in check when you’re writing the events. It’s very easy to write something that later has to be revisited and simplified, otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy…what Vegetato posted is a good start

As for the tiles, I use Tiled + a custom extension that I posted here on the forum to create the map. Zero made the autotiling available for the tiles directly in GD. The workflow is basically the same, but I can make slopes, hehe.

On top of that, I don’t need objects for animations on the map, which I consider a pretty big advantage.

I’m posting a video of the workflow here in case anyone is interested. Just to be clear, I don’t have anything finished yet. By that I mean I already have the whole foundation in place(equipment, map, collisions, quests, stats, etc. ) and now I’m at the “adding things” phase… which is the most annoying part.

Here I was testing the bat enemy…if you notice lags is bcs the recording..ythere is non ingame.

models are created from blender and then converted to sprites.

btw..i’m gonna probably redo the ambient part…which i don’t like..but this is the base.

Thanks for the responses, it really helps a lot, I’ll stick to it and I might grab that starter set.

I’m coming from a background in construct 3 and godot but gdevelop has caught my eye, Im interested to see how I can apply my existing knowledge to gdevelop.

I just purchased your metroidvania template on itch it should be very helpful, I checked out your other templates very nice work I’ll be definitely checking out the roguelike template.

Thank you for your purchase, hope it helps you in your project <3

I didn’t get to see the video but your screenshot looks great.

lol… thanks.

The problem is that Streamable generally deletes the videos after 2–3 days. But don’t worry, I only did that to show you that is possible to make nice Metroidvanias in GDevelop…if i have the time i’m gonna post a new one.

Im currently studying vegetatos metroidvania template and the dialogue tree extension for creating a dialogue engine for npcs.

Hi there, I purchased your roguelike template as well, I’ve been studying them and I must say very nice work, I’ve learnt a lot.

Thank you for your purchase <3
Glad my templates helped you learn new stuff ^^
