Avaturn.me extension

Some of you may remember that last year I started working on a Ready Player Me extension:

Unfortunately, late last year Netflix bought RPM and completely killed it in January of this year.

Now I didn’t want to lose my work on the extension so I pivoted to avaturn.me - which provides similar (tho much more modest) functionality and what is more important - GLB models which are 1-to-1 drop-in replacement for RPM models.

Similarly to RPM models, avaturn models are static (no animations), however with a pinch of magic :sparkles: this extension allows you to change a model of an already animated model an/or copy animations from one animated to another inanimate model (as long as rigs are the same). So I took Quaternius animation libraries (both old and the new one) and retargeted them to a sample Avaturn 3D model. Unfortunately I cannot redistribute paid animations but you get 85 free animations out of the box!

A couple of notes:

  • Avaturn offers “custom dev domain” subscription for $800/month. By default, this extension works with their free “demo” subdomain and it works just fine. I’m not sure what they offer for $800/mo but I ain’t payin’ that much. (Maybe if they offered 800 more clothing options that may be worth it for all us collectively to pay and use one subdomain)
  • Avaturn forces players to sign up with their email and to upload their selfie to make a model. If you’re uncomfortable with that you don’t need to use their character editor. You can still sign up for yourself, create a couple of characters, download them and use them in your games.
  • If you purchase pro versions of Quaternius animation libraries (or find any other animated humanoid glb models) you can use this extension’s Blender retarget Python script to copy those animations to Avaturn models.
