I was wondering how you usually pick color themes for your games.
I usually just go off the overall “vibe” off the game.
A bloody dungeon-crawler would be a dark kind of game and the colors should be equally as dark, maybe with dim lighting, lots of black, brown, and grays, and maybe whites and some brighter lights/colors here and there to contrast.
Great talking point! Love this kind of discussion. Thank you for bringing this up @ResinTheFuriousMage
For my games I have chosen based on the theme of the game kind of how you already stated. If the game is meant to be more dark and scary, I would go with darker color tones and less lighting used in game. If the game is more whimsical and fantasy, maybe using some brighter colors and some more atmospheric lighting. Guess it depends on the feeling I am trying to achieve throughout the game plus the scene the player is on and how I want the player to feel.
Yeh I think it’s up to what audience it’s for, like you said, the ‘vibe’ of the game. But as for how do I pick the actual colors? I usually get the basic idea I want for the colors (ie bright, primary) then use online palette generators to make a palette, color wheels to flesh the palette out, stuff like that.
