Game music vs ambience sound

Just a quick question what do you prefer I am rebuilding a game that I built a couple of years ago feedback from the game from a few players is that the music wasn’t subtle enough and didn’t match the style of game.
So I was thinking about replacing the in game music with ambience sound for example if the character is a forest area having a ambience sound of birds or if the character is in a town changing to a gentle traffic sound,

I always find one of the hardest parts is find music that is not too intense and matches the game.

Any feedback welcome.

Ambience sound might work… though, I feel that not all games, ambience might be suited for, too. So it kind of depends on the game. For example, ambience might work better for an atmospheric or fantasy game, but not so well for an 8-bit platformer.
