I probably need to consider how these sorts of posts come across to others a bit more… ignoring the glitch issue has worked thus far, but I suspect this is only temporary …and I will do the updates and internal dusting soon. My dad used to cover up warning lights that irritated him on his dashboard with electrical tape.
Updating drivers unfortunately isnt the best advice these days anymore NVIDIA and AMD drivers have been overall dumpster fires for at least 12-18 months their focus is on AI and not gamers and not pc users.
Long term the thing that will help you most is Linux. I converted to PikaOS which is Debian based Linux about 12-18 months ago. Windows era is coming to an end.
And if you ever get into JavaScript it is a lot easier setting the tools up on Linux or even if you ever use LLM’s, its a lot easier to install on Linux than Windows.
If you do use Windows I would lookup and research Tiny11 Windows. I use that for my SimCity 4 and Battletech mods which only run on Win.

Regarding the updates, if you really have not updated anything for a long time, then you should check for updates for everything including the motherboard BIOS. Not just for compatibility but more importantly for security. AI has made it easier than ever for criminals. Hacking and malware including ransomware are causing more frequent patches to block them.
I was avoiding updating to a newer Nvidia driver for my Linux Mint PC since end of 2024 because of all the talk of problems, running the 535 all that time. Now that it is the oldest on the Driver Manager list, and I see few complaints anymore, I decided to upgrade recently. Been about 3 weeks with no issues.
Linux is in a much better spot than Windows. So it’s good your Linux.
I would recommend moving on from Mint to PikaOS if you want to stay in Debian.
Forgot to add that I mentioned my recent Nvidia driver upgrade so that petlimpet knows not to avoid considering a graphics card driver upgrade. Just be aware that it may or may not give you any trouble.

You’re both far more IT aware than I am! and so some of the detail here is a little lost of me…I’m not a huge windows fan …but i’m probably unlikely to bite the Linux bullet! bill gates is charging me 100 pounds a year for thin air, holding my data hostage and the ability to type text into a document and add pictures and tables!..and that’s probably still going to be the case when im dead and buried …and the clutch pedal on my van - that wont be fixed either!

Then you will need to learn at least assembler and C/C++. They are very necessary for creating an OS. For example, assembler has a high speed of compilation into machine code (machine code is like this - 0010101011101011001). C and assembler allow you to interact with the BIOS to get the PC temperature, restart the PC, turn off the PC, and manage the PC’s battery power. C++ is used for tasks that require OOP, as C and assembly language do not have OOP.
I did briefly attempt to learn assembly language when i was 14 using zx spectrum…it ended in tears!

My first computer was a TRS80 from Zylog, with 16 Kb RAM, extended to 48 Kb 1 year later.
48Kb …wow! i had to work with 16Kb. My world could have turned out so differently had I had that level of power!
