I can no longer save as, project saves also often fail. Engine crashes if I attempt to change a global variable

Describe the bug

Ever since a recent update saving and saving as has consistently failed. If I try to modify global variables or change any conditions or actions it seems to stop the project from saving. I’m aware a new update was supposed to fix this but the issue persists within my project now.

I’ve been working on it for so long now that the thought of it being broken or ruined is destroying me. I’ve tried saving it as a new project in a new location, but it still does not fix it.

I can still open the project and run it, test it and all that. but as soon as I try to modify anything it stops working.

I’ve received this code:

Unique Error ID for debugging: 029c989c-14d7-4caa-b3c4-3e0ff812e9d9
RuntimeError: Aborted(). Build with -sASSERTIONS for more info. at abort (file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/GDEVELOP%205/resources/app.asar/www/libGD.js?cache-buster=5.6.284-7c151eef764800ce8c0f06de89a90e497b454ed9:9:7982) at _abort (file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/GDEVELOP%205/resources/app.asar/www/libGD.js?cache-buster=5.6.284-7c151eef764800ce8c0f06de89a90e497b454ed9:9:24171) at…

But have also had it out right say cannot save to file path. I’m afraid that I’m going to lose everything.

Steps to reproduce

  • Changing a variable (Especially Global)

  • Saving after changes being made to actions or conditions

  • Trying to save as in general no matter what has been attempted

Share a very simple GDevelop project showing the bug

I do not want to share my .json project file. But these are some errors I’m getting.

Hi @Subneon_Games,

Don’t worry about the orange lines in your screenshot (“Unrecognized feature: ‘monetization’”, “allow-scripts and allow-same-origin”…). They’re harmless browser warnings, they have nothing to do with your bug and they don’t block anything.

I followed your steps on the same version (5.6.284): I changed global variables, edited actions and conditions, then saved and used “Save as”. I didn’t get any error. So the problem probably comes from something specific to your project, and we need more details.

Could you send us the full content of the console when the crash happens? Here’s how to open it:

  1. In GDevelop, open the View menu and click Toggle Developer Tools. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (macOS).
  2. In the panel that opens, click the Console tab.
  3. Do what causes the crash (change a global variable, then save).
  4. Take screenshots of the red lines, or right-click in the console, choose Save as… and attach the file here.

The full error message in red, the one starting with “RuntimeError: Aborted()”, is the part we need most.

Also, so you don’t lose any work: keep a copy of your project folder somewhere safe before you try anything else.

Hey thanks for responding. I’ve been digging further for potential causes. I think there is a save bug with my .Json itself. The file size of the .Json has recently spiked to 220mb. I fear there is some kind of repetitive save bug or corruption. Something is repeating and breaking my project file.

Ive attempted to fix it via notepad++ on a duplicate but cannot seem to fix it. I’m out of my depth with this for sure. But it seems almost certain that some sort of save related issue has led to repeating and compounding code.

Its definitely beyond me at this point, is there someone at Gdevelop or in the community that has experienced this and can fix it? I dont have older saves and even if I did, I would lose way to much work. Sorry for the long response but im literally scared that my project is doomed. Ive been working on it for years :frowning:

That’s huge; normally a .json file only contains text.
Avoid making manual edits, you risk breaking the file. Make copies on other drives to be safe.

I have these ideas regarding the settings, but I haven’t dealt with such a large project:

  • In the project properties, switch to folder mode.

But make a copy of the project first. Working on the same project for months/years and having no backup is… courageous.

Do you know how many variables or scenes you have, or if you are using certain things extensively in your project?

Really, if you can share your project with the team, we will take a deeper look, but without it, we won’t be able to help further. If you can, send the json via private message to me or the @moderators group.

I have a multiple back ups, no need to worry about that. How would I send the project to you? I would love it if you guys at Gdevelop could help me out. be more then happy to send it to you guys through a secure route.

This project is a commercial game that i plan to release on steam. So I would just want to make sure its a secure means of sending it your way.

I just saw the moderator chat link you shared. I sent a message, thank you so much for helping me connect with them. Hopefully, they will know what to do, hopefully it can be fixed.
