I use Sublime Text Editor(not just for XML stuff). Lots of XML plugins for it and it’s gorgeous

If you want free, then you can’t go wrong with Notepad++ … I can’t vouch for it but a quick search in google and it has a lot of XML plugins to tidy up your code and other things.
I agree with Glaydur, if you’re using Windows it’s hard to beat Notepad++ for text editing and there’s an XML tools plugin to do what (I think) you’re looking for. I use Notepad++ with a spellchecker for my everyday typing work and would recommend it to anyone.
Well, I’m using Windows & Linux so something that works in both would be great. Tried Geany, but support for XML in it is kinda poor and frankly I’d like something made specifically for XML like there are special HTML editors.
