My first gdevelop game was a disaster

The first time I ever tried Gdevelop I was so excited and I knew that my first game was going to be a major hit. It was a platformer actually. It’s like every new game dev always does platformers.
I was ambitious at that time for someone just starting out with gdevelop. Anyway the game got published on gd games and got drumrolls

3 sessions which is basically nothing. I stretched myself too thin. Not to mention I was stuck in tutorial hell. The artwork was mff. And the controls were buggy.

I wanted to make something like Celeste or …Hollow knight. Haha. Needless to say I was sorta disappointed. Not that I was doing it for the money :neutral_face:

But I learned how the platform works. But in terms of gamedev, yeah I learned nothing.

Gdevelop is awesome and easy to use. I can definitely make something awesome on this engine. The point I’m trying to make is…it takes time to make something great.

And I made the greatest mistake not seeking feedback. I could have released v1 and asked y’all about what you like/don’t like about it. Honestly, I’m not making a platformer any time soon lol.

Gd has a great community. And I’m working on a new game rn. Not my second but it’s sorta…kinda…good? Idk. I’m really excited to see really famous gamedevs coming from gd. And I wanna see gd grow as an engine.

Feedback is probably one of the hardest parts of game design. Coming from a person who has released 5 paid projects from GDevelop onto itch in the last 2 months, I have gotten…
0 sales.
IMO Sales and Feedback are the hardest to get. BUT THANKFULLY the GDevelop communityis super nice and you can get a decent amount of feedback from the forums :smiley:
So overall, don’t make games just to get people to play them. Enjoy making them & of course when people do play them, enjoy those moments as well :smile:

Lucky you who manage to release games on a monthly basis… I’ve been working on a platformer for 8 years now, and even though I’ve finished the engine, I’m still practically missing everything else…

I think platformers have gotten to a point where there’s so much expectations to them. The market is sorta saturated right now. And folks expect something different and unique. That’s why beating Hollow Knight types is hard and time consuming.

@SnowyRawrGamer That’s so right. Making games is a fun hobby. Fortunately the more games you make, the better you get. Eventually, just eventually one of your games will stick.

It’s better to use a template than start all over from scratch.

This means a lot! People keep saying this over and over which really surprises me since I’ve been with GDevelop for only a few months now, while others like petlimpet have been here for years! I do try to be as helpful (and kind) as possible! :smile:

You will propably get the best feedback from your family and friends while discussing together your game in person.

If you want to create something unique like celeste which you mentioned…
It might be a good start if you start from scratch: from events to own assets and so on without templates- this way you can improve your skills and your game will not get confused with other games.
Maybe you are also able to find some team members while getting feedback from your friends. :sweat_smile:

You’re right. If I wanted to create something like Celeste, going with templates wouldn’t be the best option. Platformers like those have unique game mechanics and art that can’t be found in other games.

I meant that you can use templates to get the core mechanics right first before switching up the art and adding your own twist to it. A lot of platformers usually share the exact same concept.

I guess you have already tried some titles on gd.games for inspiration. Take a look at different genres, maybe there is something interesting for you to learn from some titles.
