I see some people asking for username changes, and I wanted one, too, I figure it’d be so much easier to just have an option in settings instead of a leader doing it, or there could be a setting where people could enter a name to have it approved by a leader. Another idea could be having a separate trust level after members that have certain perks, like for example, bypassing making new forum topics.

Yeah agreed. If you need it changed atm though, just ask a moderator

I am not against your idea
I say it would be QoL here
But at the same time i wonder how many users would abuse it
Or how many inappropriate nicknames would show up whne would have ability to change it at will until it would need to be reverted back for mods to 1st approve new nickname

I don’t know how many users would abuse it TBH, it just depends on who uses this platform, it’s not like we know everyone’s ages and maturity. An idea I have is we could add another trust level and make it possible to do extra stuff at that level.

BUT 2 things strikes me
1 - On which trust level?
Cause by the time however you would reach such trust level would it really be pain to just ask for nick change via new topic and wait for it to be changed?
I mean like you would not gain such trust level in a week or so
So it would require time and by that time i think in most cases ppl would be perfectly fine with their nicknames
And ones that not would not see any problem waiting for it to be changed followed by request made via new topic
2 - This will partially affect above point
I did not ask for specific number that is not the point
I would say one person even adult cause it don’t need to be someone younger
Maybe someone would get drunk or someone get some stupid idea
Or someone else would want to say bye bye to gdevelop in very specific way
And would change his nick to something like “i was doing this with your mom last night”
Only ONE person doing that in my eyes would be enough to go back to moderating manually by mods each nickname change
NOW in my eyes i would be more into any1 could change their nickname in their profile
And now moderator gets notification that someone did try to change his nickname
And if mod approves it then nick is changed
Same way as it is now with some post
(i after 2 years here am getting notifications sometimes that my posts need to be approved 1st by mod which takes around 1-2 days which is perfectly fine)
We would bypass making new forum topics
No nicknames that would be NOT ok here be approved
And everybody should be happy

Becoming a member is really easy, and doesn’t require much effort, and there are only two trust levels if I remember correctly, and those are member and leader, leaders are basically just admins, members are just users, but what about something in between that? Maybe we could allow people whose account has existed for a year and have maybe 1-5 days of reading time to make new forum topics, bypass nickname approval, and other stuff.
Edit: I just realized there’s one before member: basic, but still, you get my point I assume. I also realized that the leader trust level is the 4th level, so what’s the 3rd?

You see i had trust level allowing me to edit other ppl topic titles
I did ask mod to give me lower trust level cause maybe one day someone will piss me off
And i will do something against such user where it will look affect whole community negatively since i tend not to give a fak
But even worse what if i by mistake i edit someone topic
What if i with my dyslexia change someone topic title from How to change orientation of my SHIP
To How to change angle of my SH!T
And i already did write SH!T instead of SHIP in gdevelop discord

BUT after some trust level it is possible i would opt in for your idea be possible with same trust level
Like we can’t filter everything
Yet i still wonder after whatever time who would really need instant name change without 1st pass moderation check?

Oh, yeah, I understand, I guess it’d be possible to change your name with moderation during the member stage and without moderation during the regular stage.
I guess it would really just be QOL, though.

I think your idea is ok to the point it could come true
But really lets stop for a moment and stop thinking how cool it would be if it would come true
And think how long we would need to be here or how many posts have here before we can have instant nickname change via our profile page?
100 posts 200 posts maybe 1k posts?
Or maybe 1 month here or a year?
Whatever would be reasonable amount of posts or time frame

And would find problem in simply making forum post asking for nick change and wait 1-2 days for it?

Obviously people would have to earn the trust to do it without moderation, or maybe that just wouldn’t be a part of it.
My point is you shouldn’t have to post to get a name change, it should be a feature somewhere, I didn’t even know you could change your name via post until I tried making a post about changing my name, thank gosh that there’s a feature to show you related posts.

I changed the username as you requested.
I explored the forum options but couldn’t find any setting to allow users to choose their own usernames. There might be more settings available for administrators, but I don’t have that role.
There is an option to allow users to change their username within a certain period after creating their account. This period was originally set to 3 days, I’ve extended it to 30 days. This gives users enough time to realize any changes they might want to make, without changes over time or abuse.
Otherwise for now, we’ll stick with a topic for these requests, which is not very inconvenient and easy for moderators to edit quickly.
