Square Grid Turn-Based Rpg - Manhattan vs Chebyshev Distance

Hi guys,

I am making my first square grid turn based rpg and I have one question in regards to the gameplay:

I started making my game with Manhattan distance in mind like Final Fantasy Tactics, where moving in straight line cost 1 action point and moving diagonally cost 2 action points (because you move 2 times to get there). Same with combat system therefore melee weapons can attack only 4 directions.

Now when I think again this system might be limited and outdated (old school), should I redo everything with Chebysev distance, where moving any direction costs 1 action point and melee attack is possible in all 8 directions?

Or should I mix them, for example Movement is Manhattan (4 directions) and attack is Chebyshev (8 directions)? Not sure what players prefer today.

Thank you

I prefer 1 point no matter the direction. I guess it depends on how you move the object. Whether it moves once diagonally or needs to move twice; say up and then left.

I guess it also depends on if it can jump pieces or pieces can block it. It it was moving up and left, would pieces to the left and top block it from moving diagonally or could it still move?

Hi, thank you for your reply. It has pathfinding so it does not teleport to another side of the wall etc. Now if there is an obstacle it cannot go diagonally because to go diagonally first you would have to go right and right tile is blocked. This is an example - to go around the obstacle it would cost 4 action points.

I thought square grid are better for 4 directions and octagonal for 8 but now I am confused which one is actually better.
