Submission for game jam feedback

Right now, the game isn’t much, although I definitely plan on fleshing it out before submitting it to the jam.

Hello @Yhac10,

I was able to open your game and move around so far, but i couldn’t figure out how to interact with anything in the game. Are there any other input other than the arrow keys implemented?

Even though there’s not much to give feedback on currently, here are some things I can give feedback on while you are at this stage of development.

  • Movement felt good and I didn’t have any issues moving the character around.
  • Collision with the two ships (I believe they are ships, sorry if I’m mistaken) didn’t let my character go through them, which works.
  • The asteroid has no collision and I was able to pass through it.
  • I like the art style of the game so far, the character looks unique and stand out from the background very well.
  • The animation is nice for the character. Could be cool to have a different animations for moving around.

So far its good progress, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!

Hi!

Same remarks as Rian.
Plus this: don’t hesitate to put on paper all mechanics of your game, sprites, etc. (except if this is just for learning)
Why: because you’ll be more efficace to perform all things of your game and to see eventual traps)
It’s very important particularly if your game must be big and ambitious.

Love the art, good eye for color. Will check back for the update when the jam ends.

Here’s an updated build:

Here is a list of all that has changed:
The asteroids now have collision
There is now a border around the stage
There is also a random new spaceship
If you press space, you can shoot a laser
If you shoot lasers at the asteroids, they get destroyed (after 7 hits)

I haven’t started on the main stage yet though (the stage in the current builds is a test stage.

I have made music for the game, it’s just not yet implemented

As for how this fits into the theme, you’ll have to wait and see, no spoilers…

I would appreciate any feedback given

Nice progress! I will have to give the new build a try when I am off work. I’ll update any new feedback when I play it. Sounds like some good additions though. Keep it up!

Really loving the effects when you explode the asteroids.

Which game jam is this? I’m trying to guess the theme.

It’s for the GDevelop game jam 7. Theme is “Overpowered”. I’m also keeping the implementation of the theme secret, better with no spoilers.

Don’t have a new build, but I have added some more things:
Title Screen (with parallax moving background)
Music for main level, tutorial level, and title (all variants of the same track, with different tempo between them, along with some having more instruments playing than others)

Final Test Build before submitting to game jam:

Actually, ignore the build above, it contains some bugs, here is a new one, which doesn’t soft lock you in the tutorial stage:

You know what, here’s another build, with even more fixes:

List of changes:
Main level added
Tutorial level added
Title Screen added
Music added
Different playable character in main stage (playable character from test builds only in tutorial)

If you come across any bugs, or anything that looks unfinished, please say so in replies.

Fun little game that you made, I like the mechanics in the game and I am a fan of space theme games as well. I did run into a couple bugs which I will note down below.

  • Music when entering the main game will not stop the previous scenes music, so its two different tracks on top of each other.
  • Asteroid top right corner doesn’t take bullet damage, but it can be destroyed when running into it.
  • Not sure if collision with the player is supposed to destroy the asteroids, but they do and in a single collision.

Fun entry for the jam. Great work on the Title Screen with credits and the Tutorial - makes it look finished and professional. Good choice of music, though as noted it goes crazy in the main scene. Some of the text lines were blurry in my browser, not sure why. Overall well done project especially considering the time limit.

The music bug kinda just happens randomly, I don’t know what triggers it.

Asteroids being destroyed when Xenon flies into them is intentional, that’s what makes him “overpowered”, the triple lasers and faster speed are more of red herrings in a sense.

Lasers phasing through asteroids is also a bug I don’t know how to fix (although I did notice that the issue specifically started when I added the larger asteroids)

Well it happened for me on a scene transition, so maybe it could be related to that? Hopefully that will give you an idea.

Games fun though I enjoyed it!

Wow, I only caught it after it was submitted, but look at this progress! Intense! In the first build I had no idea what to do, and then with each iteration, things I was thinking like “oh, the designer should do x, y and z” were implemented, so the last iteration (the one you submitted to the jam) works great! Congrats!
