Voyager (2D sandbox game) (Cancelled)

are you sure? i dont think you were using tilemaps.

You can give it a shot and see, I guess! Yeah I was using one sprite (with different animations) for the land generation.

lol ok

i was only kidding

uh…well, the chunk isnt even there. It just didnt do anything

what do you mean, the chunk isnt even there? dont understand what you mean

believe me, it took me ages to figure out how to generate chunks sideways, and even so, it lagged for a few seconds whenever a new chunk was loaded in.

well, i think im cooked

I wonder how does Terraria do it. Is all game objects loaded on the scene already at start?

absolutely not. It uses chunks, i think that are 8 or 4 blocks in size

i dont think im capable of doing that

I believe this old version of Worlda generated infinitely left and right, in small chunks

Unfortunately, dont have the file anymore.

a build of it doesnt help. My main issue is if i use chunks, im gonna have to save the tiles. This is impossible to do efficiently.

I guess just have a small but detailed world?

i might have to balance the best i can with the size of the world. Its not cut and dry 1024, i just thought it was a nice number. I think i should also make it not one number for the world size. Different width than height. If theres less height, we can get more width

depends whether you want more up/down movement or sideways movement. I suggest up/down as that is a benefit of having side-on view that Worlda will never have. What about a game trying to get upwards, you start in the depths of ‘hell’ at the earth’s core, and climb up to space

i dont understand. Why up and down? i thought thats what i should remove.
Isnt that just inverted dig to china?

because the mechanics and physics of platforming is what the sideview 2D is built for, i think. Going left and right would be more boring then trying to build upwards and get to a location I think? maybe, thats a theory

well, you dont get to see anything going upwards. Just the sky. You can already mine in this game, its a huge aspect. I loved exploring horizontally in terraria, but i loved caving the most.

However…it seems i miscalcuated something.

the height is already too short to take away from it.

@Crowbar_Coder
i have a far fetched idea…what about multiple scenes?

I have thought of that, you should try that. It would just mean the game would wait for a second between each scene or something. Also if you are changing the blocks its tricky to sync and save across scenes. Especially if you add the option for different world saves, but if you have only one world save, its easy.

well, i think each scene would be its own sort of world. Theres no syncing cause it is its own thing. I made most things a global variable right now anyway, so…

i would just append a chunk number after the name, and combine them in the ui

this begs the question, do i add more then 3 chunks if i now technically have the ability (well, in the future)

so far ive made two songs for Voyager, and theyre quite interesting

I made a winter song, and i just made a song for the Underside

ones pretty chill, ones pretty horrifying
