What would you do if...? (POLL)

You are playing a game that carries the balance over to each level.
You can purchase upgrades at the end of every level using your balance.

Now, image you wanted to replay from level 5 to see if you can get a better score. You have purchased gun upgrades on level 10 that cost $50k.

A - The game could either refund your 50k and cancel the upgrades.
B - The game could say upgrades are final but the 50k is deducted from your level 5 starting balance.
C - The game could let you keep the upgrades and your old starting balance but deducts the upgrade costs over the next x levels.

What do you think is fair as a player? Or is there is another option (D)?

What about replaying level 5 with the guns you had available then?

The upgrades might not be unlocked for level 5. Imagine starting on level 1 with a rocket launcher you normally unlock on level 10? It would feel like cheating?

Depends if parts of the level were too hard and only beatable by using upgraded items. The other thing is the replay value player gets out of it by repeating a level but with better weapons or tools - playing the level 2 or more times.

It’s a tower defence game. They can only replay levels they have already beaten. I’m trying to make the game fair but stop players abusing it. If they upgrade then go back to a previous level and balance and then essentially getting the upgrades for free.

Can you make it so they can only obtain upgrades they haven’t already achieved for the replayed level?

Yes I have done that already. Say for example you have upgraded your gun to level 3. But on earlier levels you can only use it to level 1. But it doesn’t solve the guys replaying and getting their upgrades for free. Does that make sense or shall I give an example?

Key word REPLY

What i understand when i see REPLY from some point
I expect it to be same as it was when i was playing it

Imagine this
You watch 30 sec youtube video
You want to reply it from 10th sec
Would you even consider anything else to see other than what you saw for the 1st time in 10th sec?

You are here asking for kinda sorta save state or roll back
I would not even consider anything else to going 100% as it was at the point to which you want to go back

If idea is to go back to some point to check if you can get better score
NOT starting from 0 since that is busy work
Then it makes NO sense to even consider changing anything
Giving some bonus or penalty is in my eyes unfair

Unless your game would resolve around that kind of mechanics
Like for example dead cells
Where you unlock weapons each run
But you do not keep bonus money and other crap as you restart run
You can go different path with what you already found
But you need to gain your bonuses and money again

BUT again that is cause this games resolve around it

Why are they wanting to replay levels again? How does it benefit them? Are they trying to earn coin for upgrades because later levels are too hard to beat?

I will be honest, i don’t really understand the point you are making. I don’t think Watching a video is really comparable to Replaying a game level. One is passive the other is interactive. But hey we all have different opinions which is why i created the poll

Reply means Reply

You are loading a save
You are going back with your progress to some point of your journey

This is not change your location on map while you have all your gear and levels

Reply means go back to whatever it was when you experienced it back then

Is it video or is it a game
Principal is the same

RE-PLAY
Re do it
You cannot re do it changing the rules or it is not reply anymore

If you are knight and you enter dungeon with wood sword
And iron shield
You found and equip golden sword and diamond shield

Then if you wanna reply that dungeon
Doing so with golden sword and diamond shield does not count as reply
But as restarting dungeon and not your progress
Reply would be if your equipment would be reverted back to state which it was at before you entered dungeon

Unless that would be gimmick of your game

But technically reply is experiencing same thing again in same state you experienced it before

Your question is about what would make more sense to do
What if you want to reply from level 5 to get for example better score

Then what do you wanna test?
Your skills?
Or your equipment?
You right of the bat can tell with better sword and shield you will have better score and time without even trying it again

So what is the point of replaying?
Point is to check if your skills in such game get better or not
And not does stronger weapons/armor will give you better performance
Cause you do not need to reply anything to tell that

So core questions here is around what your game would resolve
Getting better or getting better equipment?

Its like in RPG you go to lower level monsters after grinding and gearing up
You really do not need to go back to know you being stronger will give you better result
While replying it with same set of gear and level will allow you to check if you would do some stuff different way you will be able to get better performance

TL;DR [sorry:]

Uhhh, no?
I mean, I got the weapon from a level I played, I didn’t use cheats (even if. As long as it’s not a multiplayer game with matchmaking or leaderboard).
I don’t play hardcore games, but I think some games allow you to restart from the beginning with the same weapons you got just before fighting the final boss.

The ideal solution here would be to save and load the progress that the player had on level 5, nullifying whatever stuff they bought on level 10, just letting them replay the level as they had the first time. When they beat a level, save their stats, unlocked weapons, etc. and load it when they replay. This might take some time to integrate but it seems like the fairest solution to me!
