Downloadable Games

Dear GDevelop Contributors,

I would like to ask the contributors, is there any possibility of downloadable options for every game, along with the core option to play the game on a browser/ online?

I have been playing games on GD. Games and the ad mechanism are so great that it does not make you bored with skipping the game, just an ad while loading the game is a super-friendly approach to show ads.

I know there are many options to download and install games (Google Play, Steam, Itch…), however, a vision on GD. Games to download a game from the platform and in-built options to show ads without hampering the gameplay of a player.

I installed a game from the Play Store, and it requires many ads during gameplay, which annoys me, though I know ads are required for developers to make and maintain the game in the future, even though I would have done the same if I were a developer myself. Major 2D games are playable on browsers /online, I know.

  1. Download options, 2. Ads during gameplay after downloading and installing the app (APK & exe) without annoying the player experience and the gaming performance both for 2D and 3D games, 3. No developer fee like the Google Play Store, 4. Less data requirement while playing the installed game to show ads. I meant the games made on the GDevelop engine. And some games will definitely perform better when they are being played on mobile or pc as an installed game. Now we can only play games on gd.games, there is no download option to download a game. If there is an option to download a game and the ads are shown easily during gameplay, as Google Play does, then it will be great, of course, with the consent.

Any monetization methods without requiring downloads?

Ma’am, currently, we can play games on gd.games. During loading, an ad or a couple of ads are showing. If we can upload our exported version (APK & .exe) on gd.games and then people download it and install it, then we can show ads as a banner, on the display top right side or top left side or at the bottom side, so that the gameplay experience does not get hampered. There is nothing wrong with the fact that anyone is able to play games for free, and any developer can upload games for free, and they get paid as per the games being played or ads being shown. That is totally ok, and I am happy with that. Therefore, I would like to know if GDevelop has any kind of vision to show ads during gameplay of an exported version, or if they can do that or will be doing that I the future. Of course, we have the Play Store, and we can download and play games. I just had a curiosity, although GDevelop are not obliged to share every news or plan with us. Thanks for your reply.

I asked this because some games will perform better in terms of everything when they are installed and played on a mobile device or PC.

It is extremely unlikely that the GDevelop.io devs would add a download option to GD.games for multiple reasons:

  1. GD.games only stores web exports of the games, which do nothing when downloaded. The compiling functionality of the gdevelop.io cloud service is (comparatively) expensive as opposed to hosting the web export.
    • Making a functional/usable download would require an option to compile the game for every single person who wants to download it, making it relatively expensive.
    • Or it would require gd.games to host every single export type for every single game, ballooning storage costs 3-4x the current size for each game.
  2. Developers have decision rights over what compilation/exports they want to make available.
    • If this was ever implemented, it wouldn’t be up to GDevelop to suddenly make the games downloadable, every dev would need to go in and either opt-in for every single game on the platform already or leave them undownloadable, and also have to opt in on any future exports.

Also, I’m not sure I understand your stated reasoning around ads, as it is up to the developers for ads on downloaded/installed version. This isn’t a play store decision, but a game developer decision. They would have the same decisions (and likely the same ads) if they allowed for any downloads on GD.games.

Edit: For context, Gdevelop.io is the cloud service provider and company, with the same devs as the open source GDevelop game engine. The GDevelop.io cloud services are technically separate from the game engine itself, due to costs involved and need for a sub and other funding to support them. GD.games is part of the gdevelop.io cloud services, not the GDevelop game engine.
