A collection of devlogs from forum users for the 9th big gdevelop game jam.
Day 1:
Basically did nothing for the most part. All I know about what I’ll do for the game is the premise, and the fact it will be another game in either the “testing grounds” series or something adjacent to it, like neo cityscapes (not been able to work on that for a while now).
I also made a music track for the game. Not sure if it fits what I’m thinking of though, so it might go unused.
Just an aside following Snowy’s message: I noticed that the beginnings of creating a game are quite, even rapid.
It’s afterward that we put (waste?) time into it.
When building a house, builders do not put in the furniture, doors, carpets, rugs, or cardboard boxes first. The reason is they have to build the house itself first, because that is the main thing. Then they can do the rest.
Making games is the same. Developers cannot just start the project by adding the main features, sounds, character dialogue, and so on. They first need to test how things feel, work, and happen. They must create the stuff around it before tackling the main parts.
Otherwise, if you jump straight into the main features without knowing if the rest of the game feels good, then you wasted your time and effort putting work into the one thing that should be tackled after everything else around it is ready.
it’s my first ever game jam!! …ive made some good progress on all the things that da just mentioned above…the main features, sounds, character dialogue and so on …recorded the theme tune today…just needs a kazoo! …tommorrow, i’ll test how things feel, and work etc…oh darn …its work and stuff …so ill do that bananas next weekend!
Did nothing, but I did start work on a music track that uses on of the samples from ALL CAPS by Madvillain. Not sure if I can use it for a game, but I felt like making it anyways.
I think I’ve come to the realization that I don’t really want to make a game for this jam. Can’t say why, but I just don’t think I just don’t really feel like making a game. That does leave. That being said, I do want to participate in some way at least in this game jam, since I’ve pretty much been involved in the itch.io community page since basically the beginning. My best bet is to probably release kind of a free music pack, since I’ve been making a lot of music recently. Only problem with that is they aren’t really “video gamey”, if you get what I’m saying. So what should I do?
I’m not doing this one but I’ve done a good number of them. I hope you have fun! My first was big game jam 5.
Keep it small and manageable, especially if you’re not used to game jams yet. You got this!
Day 1: Started working on it late at night. I wasn’t going to join because I wanted to finish other projects, but the theme reminded me of an idea I had a few months ago.
Day 2: Started working on the basic gameplay… decided to use Gdevelop physics engine
Day 3: I do not understand how the physics engine works
Day 4: Still figuring out physics. Drew some assets
Made more levels. Avoiding the important things like a “Main Menu” at the moment, and will probably procrastinate them until the last few days
Okay so…
I’m not really an art person. Most of the time, if I need art for my game, I ask a friend (a really good art designer) to make it for me. Recently, they’ve been busy and unable to make art so I ended up trying the app they use (procreate pocket) and it’s been working great for me! What do you think?
If you are wanting to create music for the game jam, I really would love a song that’s in the mobile puzzle game genre (hopefully isn’t too “video gamey”). Something like this song (far left one):
That’s a really good idea. I’ve actually been thinking about that lately, that really, maybe art IS about the tools. Obviously it’s not, but for non-artists, a range of fancy brushes makes for more creative looking drawings.
I like your drawing, it shows confidence with the tools and I think that’s another secret of art, just be confident.
