Game jam 9 devlogs

Yes, but what app do you use? I’m sure there’s true artists out there who can achieve great results with anything, but for the rest of us, why not use something that has creativity built in with nice brushes. For me, it’s Krita, but there’s lots of choice.

Day 1 Thought about the theme and picked art assets.
Day 2 Worked on the layout for level design and named it.
Day 3 Made some of the game mechanics do what they should.
Day 4 Cleaned up stuff all day.
Day 5 Going to build out some levels and add SFX/Music.
I feel crazy behind but it’ll work it’s self out

I’ve got the basic game mechanics nailed and the basic elements of a game …i’m not 100 percent sold on my graphics, theme and narrative but i’ll decide tomorrow whether there’s time to change course! Only used one behaviour so far …flash - edit! 2…used tween as well. I did one of those bugs where you change a boolean to true and the event directly below changes it to false! …doh its like going to pick the ball up and accidently kicking it over and over …and not being able to work out what’s going on.
i just looked above to see how many days we’ve had on it so far …and saw 5 and panicked …then realised that’s what frantic’s up to tomorrow! phew

Day 5: Created most of the stages (Duh 5 only, no time for more)

Created a bunch of more assets along with the basic menu screen

The physics need a TON of polishing, but I don’t have enough time to experiment. The upcoming weekend seems to be very busy for me, so I’ll need to finish my entry by Friday.

I think it’s still day 4 for me…

Day 4:
Was too busy sorting out a problem with a different game to do anything :sob: (EDIT: I SOLVED THE PROBLEM! )
Man, I’m really cutting this close…

I have tried to use mostly inkscape.

Mate.

Right, so inkscape is for drawing shapes and straight lines that are editable, also known as vectors.

Here’s some brush strokes in yellow and the brush menu in Krita, lots to choose from.

Day 5: Alright so the submissions close in 4 days and quick recap on everything
First day I had completely forgotten but made it up with the Second Day where I first set up a concept and began working on tileset art as well as gameplay, third day involved heavy development and expansion as well as taking things from past projects to implement in a more advanced way, 4th Day (May 18th) was more or less procrastination with some slight overhauls especially to the concept map and the 5th day (May 19th) involved heavier development, more changes, some increases to gateway costs, slight recolor of sprites, and some others!

For Day 6 I plan on properly organizing the Events Sheet, Adding Enemies and a way to defend yourself… (I might not do it tho just for the purpose of difficulty hehe), visual effects such as darkness to give a more horror like atmosphere, and more work on the Web-Comic!!!

Sounds like solid progress overall, especially the shift back into heavier development on Day 5. The planned additions for Day 6, events sheet, enemies and atmosphere effects, should really help bring the horror feel together. Good luck wrapping it up before submissions close!

I thought about starting this game on Monday. I had a really good idea and started working. Yesterday, I figured out the scale of my game was too much, and I ended up starting again. Still wondering if I’ll finish on time and my zeal dropped to 0.

Day 5:
I created 1 new level…and added a background!

Still really looking for music. If anyone could make (or find) something like this but CC0, that would be great!

New update after trying to work on the project.

I honestly quit. The problem isn’t Gdevelop. It’s me. Currently

  1. I lost my Zeal
  2. I have too many clashing projects and trying to squeeze a jam in stressful
  3. I am sleep deprived
  4. Probably the side effect of trying to stick to a genre before the game jam start

EDIT: And some of it is also limited due to some unfinished and undocumented Gdevelop features/extension that frustrated me. I would have tried doing it manually but that would take more time I can spare.

I wish you all best of luck in this game jam.
Also, happy to help anyone with their problems.

Day 6: Ughhh, I aint got the time for getting a whole visual effects system as well as proper enemies, thank goodness the art style and what gameplay that is there should make up for this, but I got done with organizing the events and added a proper title-screen so everything else is good but Im considering whether I should add sounds or no…
