Couldn’t have US Gold just have argued that the game was a parody, as from my limited knowledge, I remember hearing that parody games have a sort of legal protection that allows them to exist without being sued.

In some states in the world, we can’t protect an idea. GGSister is not a clone but a different variation of the Nintendo’s game.
For me, Nintendo should have lost his case.
