Outline effect padding - what is it for?

With the Outline effect, what is padding for? I thought it would be to make an extra space between the object and the outline. But whether I have the padding at 0 or a bigger number, the effect looks the same - the outline is on the border of the object. I tried using the Outline effect for both objects and layers and the padding did nothing for either.

I thought the same thing at one time but it’s for increasing the outer area that the effect can be drawn onto. Otherwise the effect gets sort of cropped. It’s more noticeable with a thicker outline with an image that goes right to the edge.

Thanks for the explanation. I just tried changing values to extremes to see the difference but failed. But I do remember now that long ago I did actually find the padding useful for what you said but had forgotten.
