Whenever I add a sprite this appears. Is saving a copy of the sprite in the project folder necessary?
Yeh you need them in your project folder. You can also just open your project assets folder and paste or drag them all in at once. Or if you are making them in one program you can export them directly into the project assets folder. Then it won’t ask you to add them.
