Ability to Add Notes/Comments to Variables and Structures in the Variables Window

This topic has been merged with Allow to add comments in Variables Editor. Please go to that message to vote the feature and engage in the discussion.

Since GDevelop has been on a nice streak with the recent quality of life additions (Props to the team!), I would like to request this niche feature.

I don’t know if I am the only one with this “problem”, but I often end up with many structures and arrays in my game and if I take for example 1-2 weeks to open the project I tend to forget what most of them do.

So I was wondering if… just like how we have comments in the scene events editor, if we could have something similar for the variables window!

Right now, when I have a complex structure I create a text variable where I explain what my structure/array/variable is for, but I don’t really want to show this in the game code.

This would also be very useful for people creating game templates, as it would help buyers understand better what each variable does. Many templates include variables whose purpose isn’t clear unless you spend a significant amount of time examining them or looking for their comment inside the scene events.

It could also benefit teams working on the same game. There would be no need to ask what a variable like LIFExHPuP does if a comment in the variables tab already explains its function.

You might say ‘Just name and manage your variables better,’ and I agree! But as your game grows, there comes a point where many variables end up with similar names, no matter how well you manage them. So why not have this extra option if possible? I think a lot of people would use it.

i agree - id suggested this a few of months ago and someone suggested it last month…so i’m assuming its a regular suggestion. I thought if you’re collabing you could leave a note like - what’s this one do? Is it redundant? instead of adding the text variable ‘WhatThisOneDo’ set to ‘Is is redundant?’

While I agree with the idea, reminder folks: Always search for existing feature requests and bump them up with support/more details, as mentioned in the feature request rules.

Duplicate requests are generally ignored, and can lead to the original (and each duplicate) as not being valuable as they don’t see user activity on them.

Here’s a prior ones for this idea that also didn’t adhere to the rule (and therefore likely aren’t seen): Adding comments to variables
Comments in variables editor

Uh sorry guys, I was a bit inactive the past month, so I didn’t really see any of the other posts. Usually I search before I post, but this time Google and the forums did not show me something similar to mine.

Funny how 3 of us decided to ask the same thing in one month.

So did the devs reply to any of the other 2? Maybe we can merge them into one post? The moderators usually combine them, I think.

[Shall I delete this and just post it on @petlimpet post?]

It’s ok! It might be possible for Bouh to merge the three together?

Hello, Digitalstickmans!

Like the two topics @Silver-Streak mentioned, I had already opened one as well. In my case, I had envisioned a comment box that would work a little differently, but honestly, if they added the option to add comments like they do in events, that would be more than enough for me.

Hello all!

In the same order, why not also add notes for the objects which are, as everybody knows, yet the base in games engines?

Excuse me but it’s just an idea to add in the post of @Digitalstickmans.

Hey @Digitalstickmans,
Thank you for your topic request.
As Silver pointed out, topics with this request already exist. So, even tho I think that the way your topic is written is better (more context, a visual example, clear use case, etc.) I am making the choice of merging it with @petlimpet, since theirs has more votes and it would be better for the community to count those votes instead.

Future readers: please refer to Comments in variables editor to keep discussing forward.

Heads-up: since Bouh is not actively part of this conversation, I’ve removed the direct tag in your message.
