Today while I was hanging out developing a game template in GDevelop, I actually thought of a pretty (hopefully) decent idea! On the Gdevelop forums, there is a moderators group which people can message, and whenever something gets flagged, the mods can view and respond to it. Now I’m totally with this idea, and I think it’s the perfect way to run the forums, but I feel like the mods might have a little too much unnecessary work on their hands, work that people like me would happily enjoy doing for free!
So what I’m proposing is a helper group. Let me explain the details:
Helpers could be like mini, moderators who help with more basic things that moderators don’t want to deal with. They would also feel more like a “friend” than moderators. Usually, when you have a problem and you message a moderator, it sort of feels like you are submitting a request, and the mods answer it. With helpers, people would be able to private chat with us for basic problems, and if we can’t help them then we could let a moderator know. Note that moderators would still be accessible exactly how they currently are.
Examples of how this would work (and why it would be useful!):
Let’s say someone needs a post edited, or needs to delete a hateful reply in their topic. Right now, they would have to send out a message to the mods, and might have to wait a few hours or days to get a response. Now I’m not criticizing the speed that mods respond to things like this, but helpers could respond to the message faster, and help with a basic task such as hiding a post until moderators review it, or helping edit their post title (which is something TL3 can already do!)
Another example is imagine someone needs clarification about a rule on the forums, such as “Is it alright if I advertise my game in the community tab?” or “Where should I post about a bug I’m having with GDevelop?” Some people (including myself) have actually tried asking these questions to Discobot, who then responds with “Sorry! I can’t help with that!”. If there was a helper group, Discobot could kindly let people know how to message them, and helpers could answer any questions people might have.
Why add this helper group?
Helpers would provide a quick and easy way for people to chat with someone trusted about the site in private. They would also be able to lighten the moderators load, and help respond to smaller issues faster.
So what abilities would helpers get?
1: Helpers would get their own group, just like the moderators group. This would make it super easy for people to get in touch, and get feedback from multiple trusted users at once.
2: Helpers would have a message chat with moderators where they can alert them of more important issues that the helpers themselves couldn’t solve.
3: Helpers would be able to temporarily hide posts, without fully deleting them. Moderators could then easily review these hides, see who hid them, and un-hide or delete the posts if needed.
4: Just to clear things up, helpers would not have any strong moderator powers. They would not be able to suspend or ban users from the site. Helpers would be an easy way to complete simple tasks such as hide posts, help users, and respond to flags.
How would helpers be selected?
There are 2 ideas on how this could work.
1: (Most likely option) GDevelop moderators could select specific people to become one. (Just like they do with leaders.)
2: (Not very likely, but kinda cool) Maybe there would be something like “Lead Helpers” who could select other people to be helpers.
Based on feedback I get from others who read this post, I will update/ change it.
