Replace Piskel with Pixelorama as GDevelop's Default Pixel Art Editor

Note: this discussion has been redirected to New Pixel Editor. Please head to that topic to continue the conversation.

I would like to propose replacing Piskel with Pixelorama as the default pixel art editor in GDevelop. While Piskel has served us well, several persistent issues have hindered the user experience:

  1. Stability Concerns: A lot of people (Including me) have reported frequent crashes, especially when using the undo function (Ctrl+Z), leading to black screens and loss of work.

  2. Performance Limitations: Piskel struggles with larger images, often crashing with sizes beyond 600x600 pixels, which limits its utility for complex sprites.

  3. Development Status: The Piskel project appears to be abandoned by its maintainers, raising concerns about future support and updates. Not only is a security issue but also an issue regarding the bugs I just covered on.

In contrast, Pixelorama offers a robust, open-source alternative with several advantages:

Pixelorama provides enhanced tools and functionalities suitable for both beginners and experienced artists. The project is actively maintained. It’s Designed with usability in mind, Pixelorama offers an intuitive interface that is very easy to learn.

Implementing Pixelorama could significantly improve the sprite editing experience within GDevelop. I understand there are technical limitations, but after some research it seems that the web version might be compatible with react which is what GDevelop is built on.

Hello @ayitsmatt.

We have been discussing this for a long time now.

This another pixel art editor needs to be written in JavaScript, for integration purposes.

Pixelorama is made using Godot, and the devs will probably not add it to gdevelop.

If you know of any app that meets these requirements, please tell the developers about it.

This is not announced anywhere on the official roadmap nor the forum, so unless you have a source for this, please don’t make unsubstantiated feature claims.
