The push for AI needs to stop

The sell is that GDevelop is a free/cheaper Construct. GDevelop’s niche is no programming/easy to use, can do 2D + 3D and can make any type of game. It’s hard to compete on “open source” since Godot dominates there, or power/features/support since Unity dominates there.

Is a free construct 3…

With proper 3d! And a better future I hope.

To me the sell is that GDeveop is open-source Construct. Period.
In that sense, it is not competing with Godot at all. Godot is a full coding engine, GDevelop is graphical coding / template based. I used Godot for a time and found that it does not fully suit my particular needs and work style. A Construct/GDevelop approach is closer to what I am looking for in my projects. Construct is crazy expensive, especially when you just want to try it out, and also non-open source. In this day and age I am becoming increasingly wary of anything that is in the hands of just one company which can go crazy at a moments notice, taking years of my work and skill building with it.
So, basically GDevelop to Construct is what Godot is to Unity and that’s why I chose it. It may be a niche, but it is a respectable niche with a lot of potential users.
AI has absolutely nothing to do with it and is in fact a negative when I try to sell it to my dev and artist friends.
If the devs have financial issues or would simply want to increase revenue, going the AI route is not ideal - especially now given how much the attitude of the public, especially creatives who are the target audience, has rapidly soured on AI. There are better options.

(Also I am not sure how this whole AI subscription thing meshes with the open-source principles. If I find that the principles of FOSS are in any way jeopardized by AI features and cloud subscription model I will be gone in a second because that was the main deciding factor in my choice of GDevelop over others.)

Hope that this doesn’t come across as too off-topic. Earlier in this thread @ZeroX4 made a plea for users to look at the how do i section more frequently. I gave, what in retrospect, was a flippant response as I felt that there didn’t actually seem to be much ‘how do i’ action going on. Since then I’ve thought on this a bit and seen a few how do i’s go unanswered, and decided that it’s well worth appealing to folk with knowledge in certain areas.
General logic flow issues get a swift response and anything with ‘bug’ in the title, or anything pathfinding related or concerning variables or expressions but …
Topics that get a slow response are:
Multiplayer - There’s one sitting there, gathering dust right now. Multiplayer problems are a pain to diagnose - and not a lot of fun. My multiplayer experience is limited and i would need to literally attempt to recreate what someone’s up to in order to work out what the problem is - Like most people - i’d rather do something else! So if there are experienced multiplayer users out there who enjoy problem solving we get about one of these a week!
Firebase Issues -
Technical Sound Issues
Yarn - It only seems to be worried pixel answering the yarn how do i’s - we could do with another yarn user looking out for them

Gonna go on a sidenote for a second and say I don’t like that people call event-sheet programming “construct 3”, the concept’s existed since the 90’s with klik n play and clickteam, construct and gdevelop just copied it and made better engines around the concept, I don’t want “visual scripting” to be synonymous with this terrible thing

Visual scripting in general has had an unfair history throught the years.
For years people who wrote code kept going at us for “not being real programmers”, and now they have ai write everything for them while claiming it’s an essential part of programming, yeah, to have someone else do everything for little baby you, give me a fucking break…

I used to be a code purist (started programming with basic, pascal and fortran if you believe it) but with time I learned to appreciate visual scripting. Sometimes, like 90% of the time, you don’t want to bother with coding trivial stuff from scratch and in that sense I do understand the vibe crowd (though I believe their approach is not going to get them as far as they’d like).
It’s a compromise, imo and there is no perfect development environment, at least not one for everyone.
To me, personally, an ideal engine would combine both visual scripting and coding - you can do almost anything visually but you can also access code directly if you wish to. This seems to be the general direction serious engines are moving in anyway so I can say I’m relatively content.

…as for Construct… It’s currently the premier indie visual scripting engine and its quite similar to GDevelop in all respects. So… “visual-scripting” alone may refer to, say, Unreal Engine as well. “Event sheets” is also rather vague. Construct is quite well-known and so we use whatever words and terms to get the message across. Perhaps in a few years people will talk about “Gdevelop-like?”

The irony is that the Construct forums has a thread on whether they should adopt AI or not.

How Unity’s AI integration plays out will be the bellweather of user acceptance, being the biggest engine. Will their users leave over it in significant numbers? Will the loss be balanced out or surpassed by gaining new users?

Funny how they have a thread whether they should implement it for a proprietary, closed-source engine and yet no one asked us about it for this supposedly open-source one…

I did not plea for anything
I was pointing out
Ppl who are here saying whatever against AI
Will not put any effort into solving problems in How do i? forum section

Look at Peeblo
A lot of us know how to remove watermark from gdevelop in a very easier way
Yet we do not spread it cause we are aware gdevelop is making money on subscriptions and some ppl buy them to remove this watermark
But Peeblo?

In who’s interest he is acting?
Do not just read what ppl write
Start using your brains and think why they are doing what they are doing and in who’s best interest

And you will quickly realize what kind of ppl are speaking out here

And for you @Peeblo

And if you still don’t get it
Codding is when you are writing a code
Programming is when you issue commands for something to execute something
Same way we can say when you set up your washing machine you are programming it

If you don’t know what some words mean you should not use them
I gonna block you cause i seen a lot of BS from you here and on discord
And i don’t believe you can write anything valuable to read

I think I fully understand why people dislike you

Folks, just to be clear: Please keep your discussion in this thread focused on the inclusion or removal of AI, not attacking each other. This is explicitly for both sides of the argument, and both posters above.

This is a rule of the forum itself (and all GDevelop communities overall, forum, discord, and otherwise), so if the thread is no longer about the main subject and instead just for back and forth attacks the thread will be closed out.

I am not a moderator so I do not have the authority nor permissions (nor desire) to pass out warnings/etc, but I will just outright end the thread if it’s no longer viable for discussion of the original topic.

I’m a bit curious about this but who are the moderators here?
I figured Bouh might be one, but I always thought you were one since in the discord I’m pretty sure you had been a moderator there before I was kicked

Silver-Streak some time ago stepped down from being moderator
For me he will always be moderator no matter what

And here is answer to your other question

Oh alrighty, thank you!

What did I say? Not the same thing? I’ve already written so many messages on this topic here…
I’m telling you that they will burst this way! It’s better to let them add useful features! Will physics be improved as much as possible, rather than AI consuming money to create and delaying developers?
That’s it, I’m tired of arguing…

I’ll explain everything. Visual programming doesn’t have hundreds of functions. It seems to be a minus. But there is also a plus because it is easy.
The cons are that it is impossible to create a very interesting and complex game without programming. For example, the match-3 template still has bugs.
And create candy crush? Impossible.

I like programming more. But good engines don’t work.!!! Programming provides thousands of functions! This is its advantage, but the disadvantage is that some people do not want to learn programming languages!
AI can be considered the main mistake of the engine, and if they do not stop, then the last one. For some reason, they don’t listen to the community, but in vain!!!
The best thing would be to create new extensions, templates, multiplayer updates …
AI will not live up to expectations! Don’t you see that, for example, almost no one uses a piggy bank at all.

I’m reading you all.
But if I start to kick, mute, ban or close topic, there won’t be anyone left to read in this topic.
That said…I would save reading time.

It’s true that it’s all over the place, I wonder about the relevance of this topic after the latest off-topic posts.

they say countries break from the inside, this entire topic illustrates this

I’m firmly against AI in most applications other than detecting cancer, and I was a little disappointed when I saw its introduction here, but guess what I’m not gonna whine because:

noAI

Personal problem solved. I don’t see the button that I will never click on, so why would I care? I don’t care how many people refuse to try GD because of the advertising. That’s a problem for the staff to worry about. It isn’t my money or my problem. If there was some critical feature that was missing because they spent too much resources on AI, then I would leave, but right now that isn’t the case. I started using it before this was added, and since then a lot of other features that I actually do care about have been added or improved upon.

As for people who are running out of credits - I see that as a self-fulfilling prophecy…
