Hey!
Technically this isn’t a bug, but I feel like it fits a bug report.
Lots of people on the forum are complaining that their game gets cropped on certain resolutions. This is because games automatically get set to “Extend or Crop Game Size” in GDevelop.
I’ve never seen single person use this feature, so I would love if the preset was changed to “No changes to the game size”.
Sure, it removes the black bars, but it extends the game, causing your players to see out of bounds. Sure, no one might use it, but would you rather your players see outside of your game? It would surely ruin the experience.
“No changes” always works for me. Here is what they each do:
No changes adds black bars
Extend lets the player see out of bounds (or crops) in that direction
Do not judge everyone by one game
Or by your preferences
For exploring game i totally agree
Maybe even for puzzle game
For some RPG maybe yes
But for example for farming game
Or board game maybe even bullet hell
For sure not
Where your point makes no sense and is stupid
Cause we are talking here about which option should be 1st (actually Snowy is cause i do not care for order)
And not removing something and leaving only one option
Actually it would totally vary from game to game depending on does it give unfair advantage or does it not
In fact you picked wrong user to bring up that argument
It’s with this kind of condescending word that a dialogue of the deaf can begin.
Try to not calling saying people are stupid, vulgarity is not welcome on the forum.
But the problem is i did not call any1 stupid here
Do not put words into my mouth cause what you are doing right now is what other users did to me and what i was reporting already
And i would not expect that from a moderator
In fact last time i reported user for doing it it was you who corrected that user that i did not say whatever he was trying to impute and its not ok to impute things that other users did not say
In context of this conversation POINT Supermario4545 made is stupid in my eyes
Cause he is defending what users would prefer but the thing is no one is arguing here of what we should or should not have
Snowy is only proposing one option to be default where i really do not care which will be default as long as there are other options and i can select one i want
So i was not even against option Snowy want to be default
So again POINT Supermario4545 is making is stupid in this exact case
Cause that is not what we are talking about here
And again POINT itself and not Supermario4545 (in that exact case)
So i did not call any1 stupid here
If we would talk here about removing one option and leaving only other one then i would see POINT Supermario4545 as perfectly reasonable
But in this context it have nothing to do with the feature itself
Where if you would quote full paragraph of mine it would be even more obvious i was referring to POINT and not to a user
Where 3rd word in 1st line already points out that i am not calling someone stupid
But calling point being stupid in this conversation cause that is not what we are talking about
Speaking of screen troubles, I’m making a portrait mode game at 720p (9:16). While Extend is great for avoiding black bars on wider screens by adding extra space, it works against me on phones with a 9:21 aspect ratio - the game ends up cropped horizontally and some portion of game invisible.
Any ideas on how to make the 21:9 screen area extend by height (to avoid width cropping) while still extending by width for phones with wider screens?
Zero…please take this the right way…
The problem here isn’t that you’ve called someone stupid or that you’ve called the point that they were making stupid.
The problem here is that you’re using the word without appreciating the problems that using it can cause and the tone of your response is confrontational.
Yes you have picked up on the discrepancy in Bouh’s intervention - yes you did call the point stupid and not the person. But that’s not the point.
You’re one of the few on here who enjoys an argument. I’ve got no problem with you enjoying an argument, it’s just that most people on here don’t. Some people using this forum are 13 years old … possibly younger, and some on here have thicker skins than others.
Personally I think it would be a great shame if you’re inability to judge the way in which you’re coming across leads to you leaving the forum as you’re a bright mind with great ideas …and I’ve seen you be super helpful on numerous occasions, but i’ve also seen you sometimes respond in ways that people who don’t know you might take offense to.
I’m not immune from a failure to appreciate that way that i might be being perceived by others …im sure that comments that i’ve left on here, that i’ve found amusing…were just perceived by others as odd, weird, naff or lame …but hopefully never offensive. But I promise to stop and think before clicking the purple rectangle…if you do!
2nd
You are next person here who is putting words into my mouth
So let me repeat
In this exact case that point is stupid for me
I did not say that point itself is stupid but that in this case it is
If i would say that ppl prefer gdevelop more than unity cause we have preview links to dev build generated in few seconds
Would that be stupid point? No cause it is good that we have them and we all can agree on that and that is good point
BUT in this exact conversation it would be stupid point cause it makes no sense
Cause that conversation is not about it
And same story with point i was referring to above
And i did not go out of my way to just tell Supermario4545 that his point is just stupid for me cause i feel like it
Nah he replied to me with his point which was not even any point in that conversation
So like what?
He could as well reply to me with
Ppl prefer to fire bullets with firebullet behavior than add force action
And that would also be stupid point to me cause that was not part of that conversation and not one any1 was arguing over it
Point itself would not be stupid
But in this exact conversation for me it would be stupid cause it would make no sense being not related to what is being requested as feature
I write walls of text to explain what i meant so there is no room for speculation and no one can accuse me of something i did not say
But seems it still happens
And just to be clear
but i’ve also seen you sometimes respond in ways that people who don’t know you might take offense to
I don’t know you (actually i really don’t)
Can i take your message as being offensive?
Or should i assume you know that its not ok to be hostile
And you did not meant anything wrong?
Do you know how old i am? Maybe i am 13 years old maybe even my skin is not so thick and your words did actually hurt me
Now who would write that much JS for a simple screen cropping fix? Now yes, I shouldn’t judge people by one game or by my preferences, but I feel like everyone would rather have the black bars than not. And if you truly don’t want the black bars, then just set your resolution to 1920x1080. Extending would only make the game seem unfinished and broken, unless you were going for that feeling. Now this is where your point seems dumb: why would this give an advantage to any game, or a disadvantage? You wouldn’t want to release your game looking broken, would you?
No changes to the game size doesn’t allow players to see outside of the camera’s view.
While Extend the game’s size extends outside of the camera’s view.
This is WHY No changes to the game size is better.
I know this isn’t related to your current post, but i didn’t see a better way to post this.
Also showing that you can code is JS doesn’t prove anything.
I know you’re helpful - I said that! - And 100 percent correct on that thread. And no …I don’t know you, but since i’m on here far more often than is healthy, I’m more aware than those who are new to this forum that your replies can at times take a confrontational tone…that I feel, on this occasion …wasn’t really necessary (why does it still take me half an hour to get that word right!)
Before we start
I wonder how appropriate is you telling me my point is dumb
I wonder is it ok to say that someone point is dumb but its not ok to say its stupid
Cause then would actual word would matter?
Where on other hand what you are now trying to argue over is a feature that some users actually want
I winder will Bouh will come now after you
Where personally from my side you should not feel bad
I will be more than happy to prove you how wrong you are
Look im recreating some pico8 game
Where all you can do is cut trees and and break stones
To gather resources and then build your own village
How unfinished my game gonna look if UI is properly sticking to corners of the screen where you can scale size of UI?
I could also just make it auto scale
How about
You explain to me how unfinished my calculator looks when its auto adapting to screen size
I will be also open to hearing any type of criticism
On how seeing more background in this one gonna give unfair advantage
And how unfinished it would look like
This is sarcastic
But i do expect from you ultra serious answers
But before you go i will repeat myself
It only depends on what kind of game you are making
And not on your or mine or any1 preferences
Where again nobody here was talking about taking something away
But only about making something default option
This is whole other argument
Where i would say what is unprofessional and unfinished
Is where i know you could adjust UI to always fit the screen or adapt its position or scale with zoom
And hide/mask in some cleaver way exceeded game area with fog or buildings or whatever else that would come to your mind
Where i am more than aware that it would not be possible for all kind of games
Few times i said doing something is stupid
I guess by Rowan_Clark reaction he is pretty ok with it
But did i say something wrong here?
Cause doing stuff i described when you think about it is actually stupid
Or is the fact that Rowan could take it as offense is wrong here?
Like not what i wrote is bad
But how someone can interpret it is bad
I gonna leave you to it
I don’t believe i can add anything to this conversation
